ZRP GOES AFTER TOUT GANGS
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has started a blitz titled ‘No To Touts’, it has revealed.
In a statement, cops says the campaign was to ‘specifically ensure that all touting by who are harassing, threatening and forcing travelers to public service vehicles and pirate taxis are arrested and taken to court.’
“As on 20th June 2024, a total of 410 touts were arrested and taken to court for law to take its course,” the ZRP said.
The arrested people are appearing in court in batches, with no deposit fines accepted at police stations.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), 147 have appeared in court.
“Some of the accused persons pleaded guilty and have been sentenced to a level 3 fine of USD20 coupled with a 2 or 3 months suspended sentence for 2 years as a deterrent measure,” said the NPA.
“The court is still in session. More to follow
Cops warned ‘strongly warned’ public service operators against employing touts, saying those found doing so would face the law.
The same sentiment was expressed concerning taxis or mushikashika
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges the public to anyone engaged in touting at any nearest Police Station or National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197,” the statement ended.
