Godwin Matanga retired amid ZRP shake-up

HARARE – Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner General Tandabantu Godwin Matanga has been retired by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in a major shake-up of the law enforcement agency. The retirement takes effect after duty on December 31, 2024, according to Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Martin Rushwaya.

The move comes amid broader changes aimed at revitalizing the ZRP and aligning it with Mnangagwa’s administration goals. Sources revealed Matanga, who was appointed in 2018 following the ouster of long-time President Robert Mugabe, may be reassigned to a diplomatic role.

Deputy Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba is tipped to succeed Matanga, insiders said, though no official announcement has been made. Matanga replaced Augustine Chihuri, who fled into exile in 2017, and has overseen the police during politically sensitive periods. His retirement comes as Mnangagwa continues a pattern of security sector reforms, including reshuffles in the military and intelligence services.
