Chipinge Family Terrorised by Ghosts of Two Dead Sangomas: Chikwereti Chezvikwambo Left Zim In Shock
A family in Chipinge, Zimbabwe, has been living in fear following a series of mysterious fires and eerie occurrences allegedly caused by the ghosts of two deceased sangomas. The incidents, which locals believe stem from unpaid debts related to spiritual services (known as chikwereti chezvikwambo), have left the community both bewildered and terrified.
The family, whose identity has been withheld, claims the trouble began shortly after the passing of the two sangomas, who had reportedly performed rituals for them in exchange for livestock and money. Unsettling events, including unexplained fires that destroyed their homestead and belongings, began shortly after the sangomas’ deaths. Witnesses say the fires appear spontaneously and cannot be extinguished using conventional methods.
Villagers attribute the phenomena to unsettled spiritual debts (zvikwambo), suggesting that the sangomas’ spirits have returned to torment the family for failing to honor their payment agreements. A neighbor, Thomas Dube, stated, “We hear strange noises at night, and the fires are unlike anything we’ve seen before. It’s as if the spirits are angry.”
Traditional healers in the area have weighed in, recommending that the family conduct cleansing ceremonies to appease the restless spirits. “Ignoring spiritual debts can have severe consequences. They must fulfill their obligations to put the spirits to rest,” said one healer.
The events have also sparked a broader debate about the ethics of spiritual practices and the implications of unpaid debts to traditional healers.
For now, the family is seeking refuge at a relative’s home while plans for a cleansing ceremony are underway. As the mysterious fires and ghostly disturbances continue, the story serves as a chilling reminder of the powerful role that ancestral and spiritual beliefs play in the lives of many in Zimbabwe.
