In a belated commemoration of International Women’s Day, the Sustainable Use of Resources Organization (TSURO) Trust hosted a vibrant celebration at Bumba Secondary School in Chimanimani last week

The event brought together women from various villages, but what stood out was the presence of men who shared their perspectives on how empowering women has positively impacted their lives.

Peter Chamhazhika, a self-proclaimed gender champion, highlighted the transformation in his household since embracing gender equality.

“We are now able to balance our chores at home with my wife without complaints, including duties such as cattle herding,” he said. He also acknowledged the financial benefits of women’s participation in community savings groups like Mikando.

“Previously, it was difficult to manage expenses due to economic hardships, but with my wife’s involvement in these financial groups, we are seeing a difference,” Chamhazhika added.

Similarly, Mr. Makaya, a lead farmer attending the event, praised TSURO Trust’s initiatives, particularly the Nature Plus project, which has equipped women with crucial knowledge in sustainable farming and resource management.

“Preaching equality in our homes has changed our lives. Through this project, our wives have gained knowledge that benefits the entire family. I am happy that our burdens have been reduced,” he said.

Rudo Marange, Chimanimani District Officer from the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, commended TSURO Trust’s efforts in promoting women’s empowerment. She emphasized that gender equality is not only about uplifting women but also about fostering balanced and progressive communities.

“The government of Zimbabwe recognizes that empowerment is not just the right thing to do but is the critical ingredients to fight against extreme poverty, illiteracy , hunger and malnutrition” Said Mrs Marange

The event served as a reminder that empowering women creates ripple effects that benefit entire households and communities, a sentiment echoed by the men who attended.
