SANYATWE SETS AMBITIOUS GOALS AFTER BEING SWORN IN AS ZIMBABWE’S NEW SPORTS MINISTER

Lieutenant General Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe has promised to focus on national unity, youth empowerment, and promoting Zimbabwe’s identity after being sworn in as the country’s new Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

Sanyatwe’s appointment follows Kirsty Coventry’s recent election as president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He officially took the oath of office at State House in Harare on Thursday, 27 March. The ceremony was presided over by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and attended by Vice Presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi, alongside other senior government officials.

Speaking to the media after the ceremony, Sanyatwe expressed gratitude to President Mnangagwa, describing the appointment as a humbling honour.

“Allow me first to thank His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and the Commander in Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to appoint me to be his Minister in the Ministry of Sports, Recreation and Arts, and Culture. It is indeed a great honour, special recognition from His Excellency. In fact, I am also humbled by the confidence and trust that the President has accorded me to lead this special ministry,” he said.

Highlighting the role of his new portfolio, Sanyatwe stressed that sport, arts, and culture are vital drivers of social cohesion and economic development.

“In essence, Sports, Arts and Culture, to me, are very strong tools to national unity, youth empowerment, as well as economic growth. It is with these that a nation is identified and has an identity, history, as well as the aspiration of a nation. Given that background, it is my submission that I should by all means take on board all stakeholders as I embark on my new journey to lead this mission,” Sanyatwe explained.

Looking ahead, Sanyatwe pledged to work with all relevant stakeholders to strengthen the ministry’s role in shaping Zimbabwe’s national identity.

“My mission is to develop, create as well as to promote all the aspects that go by our identity and where possible for them to be recognised locally and internationally,” he added. *_-iHarare_*
