According to a source who is employed at Pa Tawaz bar who preferred to speak anonymously, on Friday, two men – although it is suspected that they were many – visited the bar as patrons in the evening. Pa Tawaz bar and restaurant is located in the Harare CBD.
“They bought some beers, and, after some time one of them identified himself as a police officer working for the Criminal Investigation Department homicide (CID). He produced an unidentified gun,and was asked by one of the bouncers working at Pa Tawaz bar not to scare patrons by showing off the gun. When he refused to holster hisngun, a scuffle ensured and he was injured by unknown patrons. Thentwo men managed to escape from the angry patrons.”
On the following day, the men came back again and one Tonderai Nyamande (alias) Nyandoro (pictured) approached the owner of Pa Tawaz bar Mr Tawanda Chisasa and told him that his companion – who was later identified as Zaranyika – was dispossed of his wallet containing US$520 during the commotion the previous day, so they wanted their money and phone back.
It is allegedly said Mr Tawanda Chisasa agreed to pay the money and phone back, and told him to wait as he was trying to organize the money.
The suspicious business man, populary known as Tawaz, then called and alerted CID homicide at Harare Central Police station who swiftly attended the scene and arrested the two men. They were searched by the police and fake police identity and national identity cards were recovered from Nyamande while Zaranyika managed to escape.
Nyamande was taken to Harare Central Police Station and Zaranyika was called by the police to come and surrender himself and the gun that he had. He complied but brought a toy gun and said that was what he had.
One of the bar patrons positively identified Nyamande and alleged he had impersonated himself as a detective and had asked him to pay US$700 to facilitate the removal of his relative who is in remand prison.
Efforts to get comment from Harare Provincial police spokesperson Chakanza were fruitless as his phone was not reachable before going to print.
