MUTARE:  A significant step towards sustainability and community empowerment was taken as Hillcrest College unveiled its new 200kW renewable solar energy project recently, marking a pivotal moment for one of the top-performing schools in Mutare. The project was officially inaugurated by Misheck Mugadza, the Minister of State for Manicaland Province, in a ceremony that underscored the importance of renewable energy initiatives.

Hillcrest College in Mutare is one of the well established school in Zimbabwe

The solar energy project comprises two 50 kW systems, one installed at the Prep school and the other at the college. Minister Mugadza lauded Hillcrest College for its proactive approach to embracing renewable energy, stating, “Hillcrest School has taken a bold and progressive step in adopting renewable energy. The installation of the 50 kW solar system at both the Prep school and college is a blessing.”

He emphasized that this initiative not only secures the institution’s energy future but serves as a model for the wider Mutare community. “These solar projects will lead to significant energy savings for the school, reducing reliance on our national grid and diminishing the use of polluting generators,” Mugadza remarked. The system is anticipated to save the school thousands of dollars in electricity costs while contributing power back to the national grid, thus alleviating pressure on the country’s energy infrastructure.

Victoria Jakazi, the chairperson of the school board, regarded the solar project as a milestone achievement. “For many years, we have been considering a solar system to address our electricity challenges. This installation will not only alleviate those issues but will also help in cutting down costs,” she stated.

Shiraan Ahmed, Managing Director of Mega Market and a board member at Hillcrest, highlighted the community-oriented nature of the initiative. “This initiative is part of our commitment to giving back to the community and supporting the province’s economic development,” Ahmed affirmed.

The commissioning of the solar energy project at Hillcrest College represents a significant advancement in the school’s commitment to sustainability and positions it as a leader in renewable energy adoption within the region. By pioneering such initiatives, Hillcrest College aims to inspire other institutions and community members to embrace sustainable practices for a brighter, greener future.
