Zimbabweans Slam Inter Africa for Requiring 4 O-Levels to Be a Bus Conductor

A well-known Zimbabwean medical doctor sparked online backlash after he praised a job post from one of the country’s biggest bus companies.

Dr Misheck Ruwende took to social media to applaud Inter Africa for setting academic requirements for bus conductors. The company advertised a vacancy that required applicants to have at least four O-Level passes.

Doctor Believes Education Can Help Prevent Accidents

Dr Ruwende welcomed the criteria, arguing that having educated transport staff could help reduce road accidents.

He went on to say that if a conductor is required to have four O-Levels, then the driver should ideally have more, suggesting that those responsible for people’s lives on the road need to have a certain level of education.

Dr Ruwende said:

“Well done, Inter Africa. A step in the right direction towards curbing road traffic accidents in Zimbabwe. 4 O levels – conductor, I’m assuming it will be > 5 Os for the driver. It’s about rational thinking. Those with our lives in their hands must have some level of education.”

But his praise didn’t sit well with many Zimbabweans, who quickly pointed out that education alone won’t solve the country’s road safety problems.

Some argued that corruption, poor enforcement, and a broken traffic culture are the real issues, not academic certificates.

Here are some of the reactions:

@NormanTheFarmer:

Make 10 A-level passes, I doubt if it will change anything. What needs to shift IS THE CULTURE. Once you sort out the culture, fix police & VID corruption, add good, clear & concise rules, then you are on your way. That shift is perhaps needed nationwide. Every driver. #Zimbabwe

@ronald19m:

Have we ever asked how many GCSEs one needs to drive the London buses? Until we fix the real problem in our nation, we will keep chasing after our shadows. How many O’levels did one need to drive United Buses before they became ZUPCO? It’s the country which needs fixing.

@GChivandaidze:

Kufunga kwedu vanhu vatema O’level means gold apa vasina O’level ndivo vakawanda vashandirwi,,,vanawo vakangodzidza kti vazove veranda. Many business moguls are not that academically qualified, though they employ the most academically qualified. Zvimwe tirikuzvinyanya.
