Zimbabwe Republic Police have confirmed the arrest of Constable Mupandira and Constable Chirengendure, both stationed at Harare Central Police Station, for extortion.
The arrest came after the circulation of a video which went viral on social media of the two police officers taking bribes at Parkade Rank at corner Nelson Mandela Avenue and Rezende Street in the Harare central business district last week.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to inform the public that Constable Mupandira and Constable Chirengendure have been arrested. They are facing both disciplinary and criminal charges,” said Commissioner Chief Staff Officer Nyathi.
He further stated that the Commissioner General of Police does not condone corruption by any police officer and will ensure that the law take its course without fear or favour.
On the video which went viral on social media, a female police officer is clearly seen accepting bribes from suspects while sitting on a plastic chair at Parkade Rank which is at corner Nelson Mandela Avenue and Rezende Street in the Harare CBD.
Many police officers are now collecting bribes publicly from Mushikashika, vendors and motorists as if its normal to take bribes. The general public has lost confidence in police regardless of calls by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) to resist,
desist and report corruption.
