EX-BOYFRIEND JAILED 18 YEARS FOR KILLING RIVAL SUITOR
A needless crime of passion saw a Chipinge man being sentenced to 18 years in jail after he callously murdered his former girlfriend’s new flame.
Mike Shingirai (40) of Gaza O, Chipinge was convicted of murder as defined in Section 47 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, (Chapter 9:23), and was recently sentenced to 18 years in jail by Mutare High Court Judge, Justice Sijabuliso Siziba.
It was the State’s case led by principal law officer, Mr Malvin Musarurwa, that on October 31, 2024, at House Number 1172, Mistyview in Chipinge, Shingirai murdered Heriman Kazembe by striking him on the head and all over the body with a log.
The court heard that on the fateful day at around 9pm, Kazembe had an altercation with Shingirai who had visited his ex-girlfriend, Tamary Mlambo.
Shingirai attacked Kazembe with a log several times on the head and all over the body. Kazembe sustained serious head injuries.
Kazembe was taken to Chipinge District Hospital for treatment. He was unable to walk or talk, and was breathing with difficulty.
On November 2, Kazembe died at Chipinge District Hospital, and on November 8, Dr Robert Gullen conducted a post-mortem examination on his body.
As a result of the examination, he concluded that the cause of death was due to epidural haematoma and intraparenchual hematoma secondary to severe head trauma and skull vault structure.
Testifying in court, Mlambo said she parted ways with Shingirai in August 2024, and he took all his belongings and left.
She said on October 31, last year, Kazembe visited her around 8pm, and Shingirai was also present at her residence.
Shingirai demanded that the now late Kazembe should leave the house.
Mlambo told Shingirai that Kazembe was not going anywhere since he was her new boyfriend.
An enraged Shingirai damaged the window with a log he was holding, at the same time calling out that he had caught a thief.
The court heard that Kazembe tried to get out of the house, but was struck with the log, and fell down by the door.
Kazembe stood up and tried to run away, but Shingirai struck him several times all over the body.
Kazembe stood up, and walked for about 4m, and fell down.
The court heard that Shingirai kept on striking the deceased on the head several times with the log.
Tinos Manyonga and Amos Muchida tried to stop Shingirai, but he would have none of it.
He tried to attack Mlambo, and she hid in a toilet. Mlambo later ran away and hid in the bush near Birchenough Bridge-Mount Selinda Road.
Manyonga also testified during the trial, and stated that he knew Shingirai as his brother’s neighbour in Mistyview, Chipinge.
Manyonga said on the fateful night, he attended the scene of crime in the company of Amos Muchida after hearing Shingirai’s voice calling that he had caught a thief.
Upon arrival, Manyonga said, Shingirai was outside forcing to open the door, and there was someone inside who was stopping him from entering. *_-Manica Post_*
