Hope and Acceptance for Vulnerable Youths

By Rachel Murondi

Action for Youth Foundation Trust (AYFT) continues to stand at the forefront of youth-centered HIV support in Zimbabwe, with recent activities highlighting its commitment to inclusive and compassionate care. Today, the organization reaffirmed its dedication by conducting impactful programs that not only target Youths Living with HIV, but also actively involve their parents and caregivers key pillars in the broader spectrum of HIV response and support.

In a move to strengthen family-based HIV care, AYFT facilitated trainings on HIV Primary Disclosure, empowering parents and caregivers with essential skills and accurate information to responsibly and lovingly disclose HIV status to their children. The sessions, supported by the National AIDS Council of Zimbabwe and the Ministry of Health and Child Care, took place at community clinics including Glenorah Satellite Clinic and Rutsanana Polyclinic. These trainings emphasized emotional preparedness, communication techniques, and the long-term psychological benefits of timely disclosure.

In addition to caregiver inclusion, the organization also hosted Group Safe Space Meetings where YLHIV gathered to build resilience, develop confidence in partner communication, and explore personal development through role plays and peer-led discussions. These safe spaces allow young people to express themselves freely, learn coping strategies, and feel supported in an environment where their voices are heard and respected.

AYFT remains committed to creating holistic, youth-friendly programming that recognizes the importance of family, community, and personal empowerment. By equipping both the young people and their caregivers with the knowledge and tools to navigate HIV-related challenges, the organization is laying down a sustainable pathway toward better health outcomes and stronger, more informed communities.
