Chakari woman convicted of robbery after violent attack
CHAKARI, Zimbabwe — A 30-year-old Chakari woman has been convicted of robbery after attacking another woman and stealing her cellphone and cash during a confrontation over an alleged affair.
Ruramai Mamvura was found guilty by the Chakari Circuit Court for the July 23 incident, in which she accused the victim of having an extramarital relationship with her husband. When the victim denied the allegation, Mamvura assaulted her by strangling her and headbutting her in the mouth.
According to prosecutors, Mamvura then pulled a machete from her track bottoms and threatened the victim before stealing a Samsung A05 cellphone, which contained $350 in cash and the victim’s national ID card.
Mamvura was sentenced to 14 months in prison. Five months were suspended on condition of good behavior, four months were suspended on the condition that she restitutes the victim, and the remaining six months were suspended upon completion of 175 hours of community service.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe urged the public to reject violence, saying, “Crime does not pay.”
