Heavy Police Deployment For Heroes, Defence Forces Holidays
Police will be out in full force across Zimbabwe during the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays, with reckless drivers and unroadworthy vehicles set to face arrest in a nationwide safety blitz.
Commissioner-General Shepherd Mutamba said officers will mount roadblocks, conduct stop-and-search operations, patrols, and awareness campaigns in a bid to prevent road accidents.
He cited the recent fatal crash along Seke Road in Chitungwiza as a wake-up call, urging motorists to service their vehicles and obey traffic laws.
“No vehicle should be driven with mechanical defects. All unroadworthy vehicles will be impounded,” said Mutamba. “Drivers without registration plates will have their vehicles seized — no excuses.”
Motorists using unauthorised blue lights or sirens, except for the Presidium and ambulances on emergencies, also face arrest. Vehicles with illegal bar lights will be targeted under Statutory Instrument 129/2015.
Public service operators have been warned against speeding, dangerous overtaking, overloading, and employing touts. Mutamba said operators allowing harassment of passengers will be held accountable.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi added that more officers, including specialised crack teams, have been deployed to tackle armed robberies and serious crimes during the holidays.
He urged the public to report suspicious activities, avoid keeping large amounts of cash at home or work, safeguard financial information, and watch over children to protect them from drugs and violence.
