Five-Time Mr Ugly Zimbabwe Winner, William Masvinu, Eyes International Crown
Five-Time Mr Ugly Zimbabwe Winner, William Masvinu, Eyes International Crown – Zimbabwe’s most famous “ugly man,” William Masvinu, is ready to take his unusual talent to the world stage.
The 51-year-old, who has won the country’s Mr Ugly contest five times, says he now wants to compete internationally and bring glory to Zimbabwe.
The popular competition, which celebrates “beauty in ugliness,” has made Masvinu a household name since he first claimed the title in 2012.
He reclaimed it several times, including in 2017, when he walked away with US$500 and a cow after outshining rivals Fanuel Musekiwa and Maison Sere at a braai festival in Goromonzi.
Musekiwa took second place with US$200, while Sere, who once beat Masvinu in 2015, finished third with US$100.
Masvinu, known for his confidence and comic flair, declared after his victory:
“No one can dispute that I am the ugliest person in Zimbabwe. I now want to take my ugliness outside the country. If there is a Mr Ugly World, I am confident I will bring the crown home.”
Despite his dominance, some fans have voiced concern that Masvinu’s continued wins amount to a monopoly, with calls for him to retire from future contests to give others a chance.
Event founder David Machowa defended the pageant’s credibility, describing the 2017 edition as one of the best yet, drawing huge crowds and coinciding with a braai festival where over 14,000kg of meat was consumed.
Masvinu remains unfazed by criticism and insists he is determined to fly the Zimbabwean flag high if given the opportunity to compete abroad.
His sights are now set on the proposed Mr Ugly World, which organisers announced would be hosted in South Africa.
