PAINFUL DEATH: Man killed after being hit by Honda Fit…then run over by Toyota Fortuner in Bulawayo

A MAN died on the spot after being first struck by a Honda Fit before a Toyota Fortuner ran over him and sped off without stopping along 12th Avenue Extension at the intersection of Townsend Road in Bulawayo on Sunday night.

According to a statement, Bulawayo Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the accident occurred on August 17, at around 7.15PM.

“A Honda Fit was travelling along 12th Avenue Extension due east with two passengers on board, while at the same time, a pedestrian, an unknown male adult, was crossing the same road due north. The pedestrian who was crossing the road was hit by the Honda Fit on the right view mirror and fell down,” she said.

Inspector Msebele said the Honda Fit driver, a 33-year-old male adult of Matsheumhlope, Bulawayo, then stopped the vehicle to check on the victim, who was struggling to stand up.

“However, a Toyota Fortuner came and ran over the pedestrian without stopping, resulting in his death. As a result of the accident, the pedestrian sustained head injuries and he died on the spot,” she said.

Inspector Msebele said the cause of the accident is attributed to speeding by the unknown driver of the Toyota Fortuner.

“Once arrested, the driver will face charges of culpable homicide and failure to stop and render assistance after an accident. We appeal to anyone who might have information that may lead to the location and arrest of the accused to come forward. We also invite those who might be missing their relative to visit United Bulawayo Hospital or any nearest police station,” she said.

The pedestrian is described as dark in complexion, wearing black jeans, a red T-shirt and grey slippers.
