56-year old Gweru woman using Zimdancehall to educate ghetto youths
KWEKWE – An elderly woman, Sthabile Magundani (56) is going around the province educating youth on drug and substance abuse through her Zimdancehall bangers.
Magundani who hails from Mkoba 10, Gweru caught up with Masvingo Mirror after her performance at Globe and Phoenix Primary School, Kwekwe on Wednesday when presidential advisor, Dr Jorum Gumbo toured the school.
The school is under construction after classrooms curved in at the old school.
Magundani challenged youth to desist from drug and substance through her songs Muchembere pa microphone and Zvirikundishamisa.
She told Masvingo Mirror that her music is based on current affairs and hence her songs urging youth to desist from drug and substance abuse.
“I began singing when I was in Grade 3 and I still dream of becoming a great artist. My music is mainly based on current affairs and that is why I have released songs on drug and substance abuse challenging youth to desist from drugs.
“The song Muchembere pa microphone challenges youth to venture into music instead of abusing drugs. Music is something that can keep them busy and alive as young people,” she said.
Her performance was applauded by Gumbo who gave her US$50.
Magundani added that she is, however struggling to secure funding to propel her career.
“Lack of funding is my main challenge, I cannot even afford to pay studios to record my songs. Sometimes I do piece works to pay studios which is tough.
“I need to showcase my talent out there through shows because I can sing gospel, chimurenga songs and dancehall music,” she said.
