Spirit medium with 3 wives caught red handed enjoying lula lula with neighbour’s goat
A revered spirit medium in Chief Chireya’s area, Gokwe, finds himself at the centre of a deeply unsettling scandal, accused of engaging in sexual acts with a goat. The allegations have sparked outrage and concern, with traditional leaders convening to address the matter and uphold the cultural values of the region.
The alleged incident occurred on the night of August 11th, around 11 PM. Liberty Marariromba (26), a sangoma who trades as Sekuru Nevana, from Sabhuku Nevana’s village, is accused of being discovered in the kraal (goat pen) of Mrs Easther Gasura (50), a resident of Sabhuku Museru’s village, in an act of bestiality with her female goat.
The case was initially brought before Chief Chireya, Mr Henry Chidzivo (58), who, upon recognising the gravity of the situation, escalated it to a council of regional chiefs. These included Chief Njelele, Chief Nemangwe, and Chief Sahi, highlighting the significance with which the community is treating these allegations.
The four chiefs, along with their respective headmen from Nembudziya, Goredema, and Headman Nemangwe, convened a joint hearing to deliberate on the matter. The hearing took place at Nezanda-Gumiremhete, a site of traditional importance. The spirit medium, however, failed to appear before the council, leading the chiefs to proceed with the hearing and judgement in his absence.
Chief Chireya explained the process that led to the hearing. “The spirit medium we had passed away in 2002, and this spirit descended three years ago. Before accepting this spirit, we consulted with a traditional healer known as Mbuya Nehowa in Makonde to inquire. She told us to go and perform traditional rituals to see if it is a true or false spirit that was manifesting.”
Mrs Gasura, the owner of the goat and the complainant in the case, provided a detailed account of what she witnessed to the traditional leaders. “It is true that I found our spirit medium in my goat pen engaging in sexual acts with my female goat on August 11th at 11 PM. As someone who had just entered the house, I heard the goat crying, so I went out of the house without turning on the torch. I turned it on when I got to the pen and saw the spirit medium in the pen, having opened the black spiritual cloths, engaging in sexual acts with the goat,” she testified.
According to Mrs Gasura, she confronted Sekuru Nevana, asking him to explain his actions. She claims he responded that he was merely drunk. “He then sat down and apologised, and I told him that it was witchcraft that he was practising, as a man with three wives, even though one had left. I told him that he was the one killing my goats, as I had 38 goats, which then all died, leaving me with only 6, including the one he was abusing. His staff was on the ground outside the pen, along with his two containers of snuff and the dip medicine he wanted to use to spray his cattle,” she stated.
Mrs Gasura further alleges that the spirit medium offered her compensation to resolve the matter privately. “I then told him to get out of my pen, and I took his two containers of snuff and carried them into my kitchen hut, while he was apologising, saying that he would pay me US$300. He then brought US$100 immediately and later sent US$200 through his messenger Leon Kasura (45), who left it with my child, and I later saw that it was there,” she explained
Chief Chireya confirmed that the council of chiefs proceeded to pass judgement on the spirit medium despite his absence. “The spirit medium refused to come to court, so we judged him in his absence, ordering him to stop leading all traditional matters in the Gokwe region, and also to pay four cattle, as ordered by the court, to cleanse the area because he was found sleeping with a goat.”
The repercussions of this judgement are significant. The spirit medium is now barred from presiding over any traditional ceremonies or disputes within the Gokwe region. Furthermore, he has been instructed to pay four head of cattle as a form of cleansing for the alleged act.
Chief Chireya also detailed the fate of the goat involved in the incident. “The goat that he abused will be taken to the chief, where it will be slaughtered and eaten by the elders,” he stated, outlining the traditional practice to purify the situation.
Beyond the bestiality allegations, concerns have also been raised regarding the spirit medium’s conduct in other areas. Chief Chireya added that the spirit medium has also been found to be distorting traditional customs, such as charging US$25 to those who want help and being found in bars enjoying himself with the public.
The allegations against the spirit medium have raised serious questions about his suitability to hold such a position of influence within the community. Spirit mediums play a crucial role in Zimbabwean traditional society, acting as intermediaries between the living and the ancestral spirits. They are often consulted on matters of health, family, and community well-being.
The police have also been notified of the incident. The Deputy Police Spokesperson for the Midlands Province, Assistant Inspector Xolani Dube, stated that they needed to first conduct a thorough investigation into the matter involving the spirit medium. “Let us first investigate this matter fully. We will get back to you after speaking with those on the ground,” said Asst Insp Dube.
The outcome of the police investigation and the actions taken by the traditional leaders will be closely watched by the community, as they grapple with the implications of these allegations and their impact on the cultural fabric of Gokwe.
