The Rusape Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 21-year-old woman to 5
years imprisonment, with 1 year suspended, effectively serving 4 years,
for physically abusing her co-wife in a domestic dispute.
On the 2nd of November 2023, at Romsely, Nyazura, a misunderstanding
between two women married to the same man escalated into violence
at their shared home.
During the altercation, the younger wife poured boiling cooking oil on
the elder wife’s face and stomach, causing serious injuries. The attack
was described as brutal and reckless.
The court convicted the offender under the Domestic Violence Act
stressing that the courts will not tolerate acts of domestic violence
within families.
Communities are urged to resolve disputes peacefully. domestic
violence, in all its forms, is a punishable crime. The law exists to
protect victims and to deter perpetrators from turning homes into
places of violence.
