RAPE SHAME! Families hiding vile sex crimes

POLICE in Matabeleland South have raised alarm over a disturbing trend where rape cases, especially those involving children, are either reported late or not reported at all — with families accused of covering up the vile crimes.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Chiratidzo Dube, said this disturbing silence is crippling the justice system and allowing rapists to walk free.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police Victim Friendly Unit, Matabeleland South Province, has noted with great concern an upward trend of late reporting or, in some cases, non-reporting of rape cases, notably involving juveniles,” said Insp Dube.

“What is most perturbing is that this derails the justice delivery system. Our analysis has shown that most of these cases are being perpetrated by close relatives and neighbours. Families are deliberately delaying reporting as they try to solve such issues privately within a family set-up.”

She urged the public to stop sweeping such matters under the carpet and to report all cases of sexual violence immediately.

Insp Dube stressed that swift reporting can save victims from further harm and secure vital medical treatment.

“Early reporting ensures that victims get immediate medical attention to prevent sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies through post-exposure prophylaxis. Police can also collect as much evidence as possible to ensure justice is served,” she said.

Insp Dube said quick action helps remove the victim from danger and prevents culprits from escaping or tampering with evidence.

“The victim can be swiftly moved to a place of safety, and correct information can be obtained before it is adulterated by distortions and outside influence. The culprit can be brought to book before making plans to evade justice,” she said.

Police have warned that anyone caught hiding rape cases or protecting offenders will face arrest and prosecution. _*BMetro
