Zimbabwe’s Circus Economy, $100,000 Cash Gifts in a Nation with a Weekly Withdrawal Limit of $1000
Imagine an economy where one individual can hand out cash gifts of US$100,000 almost daily, while the ordinary citizen cannot withdraw more than US$10,000 a week from the bank. This is the reality unfolding in Zimbabwe today a glaring contradiction that raises more questions than answers.
These are not electronic transfers or formal bank transactions. They are brown envelopes stuffed with money, exchanged in the open. Such acts suggest the existence of massive hidden cash reserves somewhere in the country, circulating beyond the reach of regulators. Yet, from the highest office to the Reserve Bank and the police, there is a deafening silence.
Why do strict banking limits exist if they can be so brazenly ignored? Why have red flags not been raised? And why do the authorities, who are quick to penalise ordinary citizens for minor infractions, suddenly look away when the sums involved run into hundreds of thousands of dollars?
Zimbabweans are left wondering whether they live in a governed state or a circus where rules apply selectively. If institutions cannot enforce the law impartially, then the very foundation of economic fairness collapses. Accountability must prevail or public trust will continue to evaporate.
