Political Parties Are Critical Stakeholders Of ZHRC: Chairperson Majome

By Desire Tshuma

Mutare – The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) chairperson Ms Jessie Majome on Friday made a surprise stop at the ZANU‑PF national conference in Mutare, stepping into the hall just as delegates were settling into the afternoon plenary.

Her presence sparked a buzz; many attendees whispered about the rare crossover between state institutions and party gatherings.

She opened with a calm, measured address, reminding the crowd that the constitution binds all, party, government and civil society.

“The ZHRC’s mandate is to protect fundamental freedoms, to uphold transparency in land‑reform processes and to respect citizens’ rights during any policy rollout,” Majome said.

She also referenced recent reports of intimidation at political meetings, calling for “an environment where every Zimbabwean can voice concerns without fear.”

A senior ZANU‑PF official responded, acknowledging the commission’s role and pledging to work collaboratively on human‑rights training for party cadres. The exchange turned the conference into a brief but earnest dialogue on accountability, leaving attendees with a clear reminder that development thrives when rights are safeguarded.

The chairperson’s visit, though brief, underscored the importance of institutional oversight even amid party political strategy, and it was noted in the post‑conference communique as a constructive engagement.
