Zimbabwe businessmen convicted of $7 million fraud in presidential goats scheme

The High Court in Harare on Wednesday convicted businessmen Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu of fraud for using forged documents to secure a government contract worth US$7 million under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s goat supply program.

Justice Pisirayi Kwenda found the pair guilty of submitting falsified paperwork from their deregistered company, Blackdeck Private Limited, to win the contract intended for a poverty alleviation scheme.

Prosecutors said the two received the funds but failed to deliver any goats to the government.

Chimombe and Mpofu each face lengthy prison time when they return to court for sentencing on October 31. Their lawyer said they intend to appeal the conviction at the Supreme Court.
