Eight-Year-Old Killed by Speeding Pirate Taxi in Marondera
The Marondera community is in shock following the death of eight-year-old Tawananyasha Fusire, a Grade One pupil, who was fatally struck by a speeding pirate taxi, commonly known as a mushikashika, while walking to school on Friday morning.
What began as an ordinary school run turned horrific when the vehicle hit and dragged Tawananyasha for nearly ten metres.
She died on the spot, while two of her friends were injured and rushed to hospital for treatment.
Her father, Mr Edmore Fusire, expressed his heartbreak over the loss.
“This is so sad to lose such a promising child. I had enrolled her at this school because I wanted a better future for her, but this is how it has ended,” he said.
Local church leader, Bishop Liberty Munhenzva, condemned reckless driving by unlicensed operators, calling for stricter checks on drivers’ licences.
Tawananyasha’s teacher, Mrs Shupikai Shamu, described her as a quiet and obedient learner.
ZBC reported that the school and wider community are grappling with grief.
Mashonaland East ZRP Spokesperson, Inspector Simon Chazovachi, confirmed the incident and urged motorists to exercise caution.
“We urge drivers to be careful on the roads to avoid loss of life, especially that of young children,” Inspector Chazovachi said.
While the pirate taxi driver is expected to face legal consequences, nothing can undo the tragic loss of Tawananyasha’s young life.
