Chitungwiza council workers find infant’s body in sewer manhole
Municipality of Chitungwiza workers discovered the body of an infant inside an enclosed manhole while carrying out a routine sewer deblocking exercise near Mutowe and Msasa in Zengeza 5 on Friday.
The municipality confirmed the incident in a statement and said the case has been handed over to the Zimbabwe Republic Police for a full investigation. The statement reads:
“Chitungwiza Municipality wishes to inform residents of a tragic incident that occurred today in Zengeza 5 (Ward 6).
“During a routine sewer deblocking exercise near Mutowe and Msasa, our sewer maintenance team discovered the body of an infant inside an enclosed manhole.
“Her Worship the Mayor, Councillor Rosaria Mangoma, Deputy Mayor Councillor Eddmore Muringa, and Acting Town Clerk Mr Japson Nemuseso immediately visited the scene to get an appreciation of the situation.
“The matter has since been handed over to the Zimbabwe Republic Police for full investigations.
“We extend our deepest condolences over this heartbreaking incident.
“The Municipality continues to carry out sewer maintenance works as part of ongoing efforts to address blockages affecting the community.
“We urge residents to refrain from disposing of items such as sand, diapers, spoons and other foreign objects into the sewer system, as these contribute to major blockages and disrupt service delivery.
“Council remains committed to improving sewer infrastructure, including the ongoing replacement of ageing pipes on the Zengeza and Pagomba Outfall lines.
“Please note that images of the body will not be shared out of respect and in adherence to ethical communication standards.” *_-Pindula_*
