Muvevi Declared Mentally Fit, Multiple Murder Trial Set for March 2026

Years after a shocking spree of murders that gripped the nation, former police officer Jason Muvevi will finally stand trial early next year.

The High Court has scheduled the proceedings for March 16–20, 2026, after medical experts declared him mentally fit to face justice.

In 2023, Muvevi was committed to a psychiatric facility following concerns about his mental health.

However, a recent re-examination by two State-appointed psychiatrists concluded he is competent to stand trial.

The presiding magistrate, Ruth Moyo, confirmed to the court, “the accused is capable of standing trial.”

The delayed case, one of Zimbabwe’s most dramatic criminal investigations in recent years, stems from a string of alleged shootings across Harare, Hwedza, and Mutare.

Prosecutors accuse Muvevi of killing four individuals including Nyarai Round, Chrispen Kanerusine, Inspector Maxwell Hove and Munashe Majani.

He also faces four counts of attempted murder, including charges tied to an attack on a police detective and a civilian near a school.

The incidents include a church shrine shooting in Hwedza and a fatal ambush on officers on duty.

The violence spread panic and outrage nationwide, making the case deeply sensitive and widely followed by the media and the public.

Arrested after fleeing to Mozambique on January 15, 2023, Muvevi was later extradited to Zimbabwe. *NewZW*
