The Guitar Fell Quiet; Madzibaba Nicholas Zacharia Leaves A Legacy Of Rhythm

By Desire Tshuma

Harare – Madzibaba  Nicholas Zacharia, 69‑year‑old sungura maestro, had passed away at his modest homestead. Family members confirmed his death early Thursday, citing complications from long‑standing diabetes and hypertension.

Born , 5 April 1956, Zacharia’s first love was the six‑string he rescued from a neighbour’s shed. He left school after Grade 7, yet his fingers found a language that schools never taught. By the late ’80s he was a cornerstone of the Khiama Boys , the crucible that forged legends like Alick Macheso and System Tazvida. Over four decades he released 28 albums, each riff echoing the rhythm of rural Zimbabwe.

His hits, “Chikumbiro,” “Ida Anokuda” were more than songs, they were oral histories of love, loss, and resilience. In interviews he often said, _“My guitar is my voice for those who can’t speak.”_

The final months, Zacharia’s health visibly declined. Social media buzzed with photos of a gaunt figure, a swollen leg, and a plea for prayers. He posted a short video in August, thanking fans for their support and announcing the postponement of his 30th album. The community responded with vigils, church services, and a flood of messages wishing him quick recovery .

Tributes from Aleck
Macheso, who called him “uncle on the stage,” tweeted:
> “He taught us discipline, humility, and the power of a clean note. Zimbabwe has lost a father of sungura.”

The family’s statement, released on his Facebook page, read:
> “It is with heavy hearts we share the passing of Nicholas Zacharia. His music will keep marching, his lessons will continue guiding us , Every chord he strung carried a memory of independence struggles, post‑land‑reform hope, and the everyday grind of Zimbabwean life. His departure leaves a void, but his legacy—both musical and mentorship—remains a lantern for emerging artists.

May his soul rest in peace, and may his strings continue to vibrate in every sungura lover’s ear . Burial arrangements are pending and the nation will be notified in due course.
