Veteran Musician Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria Dies at 69
Nicholas Zakaria, the legendary Zimbabwean sungura musician affectionately known as “Madzibaba” and “The Senior Lecturer,” has died at the age of 69.
Zakaria passed away in the early hours of Thursday, December 11, 2025, following a prolonged illness. His death was confirmed by his family and band via an official statement posted on social media.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nicholas Zakaria, the talented musician and beloved member of our community,” the statement read.
“Nicholas left an indelible mark on the music world with his inspiring voice and dedication to his craft. His legacy will live on through his music, and he will be deeply missed by fans and loved ones.”
Born in 1956, Zakaria was a pioneering figure in Zimbabwe’s music industry. He rose to prominence as the founder and leader of the Khiama Boys, a group that helped define the sungura genre and served as a launching pad for several notable musicians, including Alick Macheso.
Over a career spanning more than four decades, Zakaria became known not only for his musical talent but also for his mentorship and humility. His influence extended beyond the stage, shaping the sound and spirit of Zimbabwean popular music.
The Zakaria family has indicated that details regarding a memorial service will be shared in due course.
He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
