Glowing tributes pour in for Madzibaba Zakaria
GLOWING tributes are pouring in for Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria, who died yesterday at Chitungwiza Central Hospital.
He succumbed to complications from diabetes and hypertension at the age of 69.
Widely celebrated as one of Zimbabwe’s most influential Sungura pioneers, Zakaria’s passing has sent shockwaves through the music industry and the wider public who grew up on his timeless sound. From fellow musicians to fans across the globe, social media has been flooded with condolence messages honouring the man affectionately known as Senior Lecturer. Many described him as a “gentle giant” of the arts, a cultural icon whose mentorship and humility shaped generations of artists. Prominent musicians have shared memories of the singer’s generosity and disciplined approach to his craft, with some calling him “a national treasure” whose music defined an era.
Government officials, promoters, church leaders and community figures have also paid tribute, highlighting the respect Zakaria commanded both on and off the stage. Fans from as far as the diaspora have expressed heartbreak, posting clips of his classic hits and reflecting on the role his music played in their upbringing. Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Honourable Lieutenant General (Rtd.) Anselem Sanyatwe, has expressed profound sadness at the passing of Zimbabwean music icon, Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria. In a statement issued on his social media account, Minister Sanyatwe described Madzibaba Nicholas as a sungura legend whose music significantly enriched the nation’s cultural heritage. “It is with deep sorrow that I learnt of the passing on of Madzibaba Nicholas Zachariah,” he said. “He leaves behind a void that makes our arts sector poorer. His contribution to Zimbabwe’s music landscape will never be forgotten.
“Rest in peace, Nicholas Zachariah.” Senior government officials described Zakaria as a “pillar of Zimbabwean cultural heritage,” noting that his work not only entertained but also helped shape the identity of local music. Minister of ICT Tatenda Mavetera, wrote: “Muzorore murugare Senior Lecturer Nicholas Zacharia, your Sungura legacy lives on…” Local councillors and young political leaders echoed similar sentiments. Alick Macheso, who was greatly influenced by him, hailed Madzibaba as an icon and hero of the arts. “I was among the first people to arrive after learning about his death around 1am,” he said. “I am what I am because of his generosity and mentorship. I will always cherish the good things he taught me.” Madzibaba’s younger brother, Zachariah Zakaria, was equally devastated.
“I have lost a pillar and someone who shaped my career. I will miss him dearly because he was a hero to us,” he emphasised.
The entire Orchestra Kwazvo ensemble was in attendance. Simon Mutambi, Spencer Khumulani, Francis “Slomo” Dakha, and Loveness Mainato were some of the notable names who graced the funeral wake earlier yesterday.
Dendera maestro Sulumani Chimbetu posted:
“We are deeply saddened to receive the news, in the early hours of this morning, of the passing of the Sungura music godfather, baba Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria.”
“As we close the year 2025 the music fraternity wakes up to a profound loss. Madzibaba was not only a pioneer of Sungura but a guiding light whose influence shaped generations of artists.
“His dedication, humility, and unmatched craftsmanship built a legacy that will forever stand as a pillar in Zimbabwean music.”
Football and music fan Chris Romario Musekiwa described Madzibaba as a true arts hero .
Actress, Amai Jilimba posted:
“Our hearts are deeply saddened by the passing of our legendary musician, Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria. To the Zakaria family, we extend our sincere condolences during this painful time. May the comfort of the Lord surround you and give you strength,” she said Arts promoter, Patson Chimbodza, affectionately known as Chipaz, said:
