Fire Hazard Alert: Roasting Maize Cobs Near High Voltage Station in Copacabana Sparks Concerns

Harare, Zimbabwe – A potentially catastrophic situation is unfolding at Copacabana, a bustling hub of activity in the heart of Harare, where vendors are roasting maize cobs mere centimetres away from a high voltage electrical station. The practice, which has been ongoing for some time, has raised alarms among residents and safety experts who warn of a looming disaster.

Located near the Copacabana combi terminal, the area is always bustling with people, with stationery combis awaiting passengers and vendors vying for space. The proximity of the roasting activity to the high voltage station and the crowded combis has created a ticking time bomb, with the risk of fire or electrical shock a constant threat.

“In case of a fire, it would be a big disaster,” said a local resident. “The combis are always packed with people, and the narrow roads would make it difficult for emergency services to access the area. It’s a recipe for a major tragedy.”

The situation is further exacerbated by the presence of flammable materials such as clothing and plastic ware in close proximity to the roasting area. In the event of a fire, the consequences could be devastating, with loss of life and property a real possibility.

The city authorities have been urged to take immediate action to address the situation and ensure the safety of vendors, commuters, and the general public. “The authorities need to relocate these vendors to a safer area and provide them with adequate fire safety equipment,” said another resident. “It’s unacceptable to put people’s lives at risk like this.”

Overcrowding, poor sanitation, and inadequate waste management are all issues that need to be addressed to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all.
