Authorities in South Africa have confirmed the death of eight people in a major fatal road traffic accident involving a Zimbabwe-bound passenger bus and a private vehicle along the N1 North in Limpopo Province.
According to information provided by South African emergency and transport authorities in Polokwane, the accident occurred on Christmas Day, 25 December 2025, at around 11:00am, near Masekwa Brick, in the Louis Trichardt area.
Authorities said the crash involved a head-on collision between a passenger bus—believed to be travelling to Zimbabwe—and a light motor vehicle (sedan). The impact was described as severe.
Emergency services on the scene confirmed that multiple fatalities were recorded at the scene. Preliminary figures provided by South African authorities indicate that at least eight (8) people died, including the driver and passengers from the private car, as well as several occupants of the bus. Officials cautioned that the death toll could change as investigations continue.
South African emergency medical services further reported that additional victims were trapped in the wreckage and were later extricated by rescue teams. Several injured passengers were stabilised at the scene and transported to nearby hospitals for further medical treatment.
The District EMS Manager, supported by multiple paramedic teams from Polokwane and surrounding areas, coordinated rescue and medical operations. Fire and rescue services also assisted with scene management and the extraction process.
Authorities said the N1 North remains closed in both directions to allow for crash investigations and debris removal. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes or delay travel, as significant traffic delays are being experienced in the area.
South African police have launched an investigation to establish the exact cause of the collision. Further details, including the identities and nationalities of the victims, are expected to be released once families have been formally notified.
