Floods, storms leave 59 dead, hundreds homeless

A total of 59 people have died, while 33 schools, four health facilities and 538 households have been damaged or destroyed since the start of the 2025/26 rainfall season, the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) has reported.

In its eighth situation report (SITREP) covering the period December 14 to 24, the CPU said the total cost of damage to property and infrastructure now stands at US$107 402.

Manicaland Province recorded the highest number of fatalities at 23, followed by Mashonaland West with 19 deaths, while 12 people have died in the Midlands Province.

Of the 33 schools damaged, Masvingo Province recorded the highest number at seven, followed by Mashonaland East, Mashonaland Central and Midlands, which each recorded six schools damaged. Matabeleland South reported damage to five schools.

“This report highlights rainfall-related incidents that occurred during the period 18–24 December 2025. The Meteorological Services Department (MSD), in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection (DCP), issued an advisory warning the public to watch out for heavy rains exceeding 50mm, accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

“As the country continues to receive high rainfall amounts, widespread impacts threatening lives, health, shelter, livelihoods and public infrastructure are being experienced,” said the Department.

According to the report, on December 21, five family members were trapped on an island along Tekwane River in Bulilima District while attempting to cross the river using a scotch cart. They failed to proceed as the current on the other side of the island was more violent, leaving them marooned.

The family remained stranded for five days, but rescue efforts by council rangers were eventually successful.

“On December 22, three women were marooned while travelling from Botswana at the confluence of the Shashane and Simukwe rivers, near the Botswana border. The incident was reported on Christmas Eve, but the area was inaccessible due to overflowing rivers and flooded bridges, rendering rescue efforts by Sub Aqua futile

“Following a request by the District Civil Protection Committee for airlifting services, the three women were successfully rescued and taken to Tshelanyemba Hospital for medical examinations and psychosocial support services,” said the Department.
