Zimbabwe tightens drink-driving enforcement with new breathalyser rules
HARARE — President Emmerson Mnangagwa has approved the use of two specific breathalyser devices for enforcing drink-driving laws in Zimbabwe, according to a government notice published on Friday.
The directive, issued under Statutory Instrument 7 of 2026, authorises traffic police to use only the ST FIT-333Gi, manufactured by Hong Kong-based AAT Limited, and the AT9000, produced by China’s Hanwei Electronics Group Corporation.
The notice was issued in terms of Section 76(9) of the Road Traffic Act and repeals the Road Traffic Act (Use of Breathalysers) Regulations, 2025, which were published as Statutory Instrument 193 of 2025.
The move standardises the breath-testing devices legally recognised for roadside enforcement and court proceedings, replacing earlier regulations that did not specify approved equipment.
Zimbabwe has stepped up efforts in recent years to curb road traffic accidents, with alcohol consumption cited by police as a contributing factor in a number of fatal crashes.
