Little Macclesfield FC pull off biggest shock of all time

Non-league Macclesfield FC today dumped holders Crystal Palace of the Premier League out of the FA Cup in the biggest shock of all time.

The National League North side, who are in the sixth-tier of the English football league system, some 117 places below their London adversaries, won 2-1 in a 3rd round tie before their unbelieving and delirious fans at Moss Ross.

The win by Macclesfield, also known as the Silkmen, helped

Palace become the first holders to crash out to non-league opposition since 1909.

The Londoners were picked apart by an inspired Macclesfield who were spearheaded by captain Paul Dawson. And it was his header which set the giant killing act in motion before half-time, with Isaac Buckley-Ricketts scoring a scrappy second on the hour mark.

Palace pulled one back through Pino’s free kick in the 90th minute. But it was not enough.

Afterwards Macclesfield fans began chanting ‘Rooney, Rooney, Rooney’ at their manager John Rooney after he was given a big hug by his elder brother Wayne of Manchester United fame.
