Alick Macheso takes annual break to focus on farming

Sungura music icon Alick Macheso has taken his annual break from the stage to focus on farming and personal reflection, with performances set to resume on January 30, his publicist Tich Makahamadze has confirmed.

Macheso, who fronts the celebrated Orchestra Mberikwazvo, has just come off an intense festive season that saw him close the year on a high note with two sold-out shows in Zvishavane and Masvingo, reaffirming his enduring appeal across generations.

However, the period was also marked by sadness after the death of his mentor, Nicholas Zakaria, which forced Macheso to suspend one of his December shows as a mark of respect.

Speaking to Standard Style, Makahamadze said the annual break was part of the musician’s long-standing routine of recharging away from the limelight.

“Macheso has taken his annual break and is currently focusing on farming,” said Makahamadze.

“This is a time for him to re-energise, reflect and reconnect with life away from the stage after a very demanding festive season.”

He added that fans should expect a refreshed and revitalised Macheso when he returns to live performances at the end of the month.

“When he comes back on January 30, people should expect a revitalised Macheso, full of energy and creativity,” Makahamadze said.

The publicist also revealed that all members of Orchestra Mberikwazvo are currently on leave, allowing the entire band to rest following a packed performance calendar.

“The whole Mberikwazvo family is on break. It’s important for the team to rest and reset before we resume shows,” he said.

Macheso’s practice of retreating into farming during breaks has become part of his identity, often cited by fans as a reflection of his humility and deep connection to the land.

With January 30 now circled on the calendar, anticipation is already building among fans eager to welcome back one of Zimbabwe’s most revered musicians to the stage. *_-The Standard_*
