Cyclone Dudzai Will Not Impact Zimbabwe, Says Meteorological Services Department

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has assured the people of Zimbabwe that Tropical Cyclone Dudzai will not have any effect on the country.

James Ngoma, the head of forecasting at MSD, stated that the department is closely monitoring the weather system and will keep the public informed.

Dudzai is the fifth cyclone of the 2025/26 rainfall season, which is projected to have more than nine cyclones, four of which have already passed.

Ngoma explained, “We have experienced four cyclones in the South West Indian Ocean this season.”

The first was Cyclone Awol from Malawi, followed by Blossom from Seychelles, and then Chenge from Tanzania.

He noted that Cyclone Chenge did not make landfall in Africa, and Cyclone Grant, which originated in Australia, also faded before reaching Zimbabwe.

Currently, MSD is monitoring Cyclone Dudzai, which was named by Zimbabwe.

However, projections indicate that Dudzai is expected to weaken before reaching Madagascar or any part of mainland Africa. Ngoma reported that it is likely to dissipate within the Indian Ocean, posing no threat to any major landmass.

The most severe tropical cyclone to impact Zimbabwe was Cyclone Idai, which occurred in March 2019, resulting in over 340 deaths and many missing individuals.

For the 2025/26 cyclone season, the names being used include Awo, Blossom, Chenge, Dudzai, and others. Zimbabwe contributed two names to this list: Dudzai and Kundai.
