CHEGUTU MEN JAILED FOR STEALING A TRACTOR BATTERY
Two Chegutu men have been jailed for theft after they were convicted of stealing a tractor battery
Chegutu Magistrates’ Court sentenced Brighton Bwanali(30) and Shadreck Simango(21) to 36months and 6months imprisonment respectively
Prosecutor PriscillaMasunungure told the court that the two men removed a battery from a tractor that was being attended to due to a tyre puncture at Ngulube Workshop.
Bwanali and Simango took the 12volts Exide battery to the Chegutu Durawall area, intending to sell it at US$10.
The prospective buyers became suspicious and alerted detectives, who promptly arrived, and upon questioning, Bwanali and Simango ran away.
The two were apprehended with the help of the public
In handing down the sentence, the magistrate Sharon Mashavire emphasised the need for deterrence noting that theft of farm equipment undermines agricultural activity and livelihoods.
Bwanali, being the older of the two, received a harsher sentence while Simngo’s sentence was lighter.
