Opposition jostles to close ranks amid Zanu PF’s Constitutional Amendment Bill bid

Ziyambi Ziyambi’s leaked Constitutional Amendment Bill 2026 proposal to the cabinet has jostled the opposition into closing ranks in an attempt to halt the extension of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term.

The Constitutional Amendment Bill 2026 was tabled before the cabinet.

According to the bill, the constitution will be amended to increase the presidential terms to seven years, the president will be elected by the Parliament and the creation of the delimitation Commission.

The bill has received a cold welcome from the opposition, which has been in disarray since the 2023 elections.

Gift Ostalos Siziba said it is high time that Zimbabweans come together in defence of the constitution.

“Zimbabweans must now convene. It is clear that the current push by Zanu PF to amputate the Constitution demands collective vigilance and a firm defence of our democratic gains. Silence is not an option when the supreme law of the land is at stake,” said Siziba.

Hwange Central Member of Parliament, Daniel Molokele, added that the country’s political space is heading for bleak days with the constitutional amendments.

“It is now very dark days in the political history of Zimbabwe.

“The 2030 Constitutional Amendment Bill is an elitist agenda that serves the political interests of a very privileged few.

“It is very selfish! It negates the hopes and aspirations of the majority of Zimbabweans. I join all the progressive forces of Zimbabwe in rejecting the so-called 2030 agenda,” said Molokele.

Hatcliff legislator, Agency Gumbo said political parties and pressure groups have a duty to halt the armendment of the constitution by the Zanu PF government.

“Sleeves are rolled up. We have no time for sideshows or endless debates which address all but the consequential issues of the day. We call on all Political parties, unions, labour, vendors, professionals, academics, churches, the youth etc to join in the fight in defence of the motherland. To defend the constitution is to defend the country,” he said.

The Constitutional Amendment Bill is a test for the country’s political players, especially in the opposition, who have been divided.

Zanu PF is deriving confidence from witnessing the bill sailing through Parliament due to its majority. *_-NewZimbabwe_*
