Mahere Challenges Chivayo To Explain Source Of Cash Handouts
Former Mt Pleasant MP and Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere has challenged Wicknell Chivayo to explain how he obtains the large sums of money he frequently distributes to public figures.
Chivayo has, over the past few years, given away vehicles and cash amounting to several million US dollars to musicians, politicians and former footballers, among others.
Mahere has questioned why the money is often handed out in cash rather than transferred through the banking system, and why it is distributed in US dollars instead of the local currency, ZiG. Wrote Mahere on X:
“How do you manage to access so much cash? Why do you never do bank transfers? How do you withdraw the money?
“Where will the money be stored? What do anti-money laundering laws say about storing cash? How do you make all this money? Which projects of yours are up and running?
“Most importantly, why do you shun the ZIG? Confirm that the local currency yakadhakwa, which is why you never use it?”
Mahere was responding to Chivayo’s announcement of his latest financial donation, this time to Highlanders Football Club.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Chivayo said he was giving cars to Highlanders officials to celebrate the club’s 1–0 victory over Dynamos in a charity match played over the weekend. Wrote Chivayo:
“In recognition of this WIN, I say BIG CONGRATULATIONS to the leadership of Highlanders FC, who must request the Club’s Curator MR JABULANI NKOMO to accompany them to Harare on Friday to see Victor at Exquisite Car Dealership and collect the following motor vehicles, which have been FULLY PAID FOR;

“The Club Chairman, Mr LUKE MNKANDLA, please collect a brand new Toyota Fortuner 2.8 4×2 GD6 valued at US$80,500;

“Chairman of the Highlanders Legends Team, our yesteryear football talisman MADINDA NDLOVU, please collect a brand new Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD6 4×2 valued at US$72,500.
“I specifically APPLAUD your support and endorsement of the developmental leadership of H.E. President Cde E.D Mnangagwa and VISION 2030, whose socio-economic transformation will ultimately benefit sport, particularly football.
“Having travelled all the way from Bulawayo, each of you shall also receive US$10,000 for fuel and pocket money for your return.”
Chivayo also gave the club’s curator, Jabulani Nkomo, US$10,000 for fuel and personal expenses, along with a further US$10,000 for Nkomo’s wife.
He added that he would immediately release US$500,000 through the club’s curator, bringing the total sponsorship for Highlanders to US$1,000,000.
