Shurugwi Man Kills Self After Reading Text Message On Wife’s Phone
A suspected domestic argument in Shurugwi ended in tragedy after a 35-year-old man reportedly took his own life over suspicions about his wife.
Tavonga Bhongwane was found hanging from a roof truss with a piece of cloth around his neck at his home in the Dorset suburb in the early hours of 8 February 2026.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko told Masvingo Mirror that the suicide is thought to have followed a dispute sparked by a cellphone message. He said:
“A 35-year-old man committed suicide in Dorset over a suspected infidelity message. We once again urge people facing conflicts to resolve their differences through dialogue.”
Inspector Mahoko said Bhongwane and his wife, Memory Muyengwa (38), reportedly argued at their shop earlier in the evening after she received a text message that made him suspicious of infidelity. The couple later went to bed.
Muyengwa is said to have woken up a few hours later to find Bhongwane hanging, with a cloth around his neck.
The body was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
Mahoko urged the public to seek counselling and handle conflicts peacefully during emotional times, warning that unresolved domestic disputes continue to cost lives.
