Woman Avoids Jail After Pouring Boiling Cooking Oil On “Cheating” Husband
A man from Mvuma was seriously injured after his 28-year-old wife, driven by jealousy, poured boiling cooking oil on him when she found a suspicious number on his phone.
The wife, Nyasha Chiwenga, avoided a prison sentence and was instead ordered to complete 630 hours of community service for scalding her husband.
Chiwenga, a mother of two, had initially been sentenced to 36 months in prison for attempted murder.
However, twelve months were suspended for five years, while the remaining 24 months were fully suspended on the condition that she completes her community service at Domboramwari Primary School in Mvuma.
She had pleaded not guilty but was convicted following a full trial before Gweru Regional Magistrate Sibongile Marondedze.
The court heard that the incident took place in the early hours of 8 January 2026, at Village 4A, Manyora, after a domestic dispute over a woman’s contact found on her husband’s phone.
Prosecutor Monica Mungwena told the court that Chiwenga confronted her husband, Abel Ndazawani, before going outside and returning with boiling cooking oil, which she poured over his face, head, chest, and right arm, causing severe burns. Neighbours rushed Ndazawani to Chivhu General Hospital for treatment.
In her defence, Chiwenga said she had acted in anger, claiming her husband had infected her with HIV. Ndazawani denied the allegation during the trial.
When handing down the sentence, Magistrate Marondedze noted that Chiwenga was a first-time offender and a mother to two young children, aged two and four. At the time, she did not know where one of the children was.
While sparing her a prison term, the magistrate stressed that the offence was serious and she could have killed her husband.
