Lightning Kills 22-Year-Old Man in Chipinge
A 22-year-old man from Jongwe Village, Chipinge, tragically died after being struck by lightning during a thunderstorm on Monday evening.
The victim has been identified as John Munhumumwe.
According to police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, Munhumumwe was walking home from Majoka Business Centre around 5 PM on March 2, 2026, accompanied by his 18-year-old brother, Charles.
The storm began suddenly, bringing strong winds and flashing lightning.
Eyewitness Caiphas Sithole, 57, who was working in his field nearby, described seeing a bright flash of lightning followed by a loud thunderclap.
He then heard cries coming from the direction where the brothers were walking.
Upon rushing to the scene, he found Munhumumwe unconscious on the ground, with their mother, Mrs. Rossy Dowe, by his side, Manicapost reports.
Community members quickly helped carry Munhumumwe to St Peter’s Hospital, but he was declared dead upon arrival.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police in Chisumbanje have been notified, and the body has been sent to the mortuary for a post-mortem. Investigations are ongoing.
Police are urging the public to take precautions during thunderstorms and seek shelter, especially as the rainy season continues and lightning remains a serious risk.
