Gokwe herdboy, maid jailed 50 years for rape
The Gokwe community has been left reeling in shock and sorrow after a herdboy and a maid were sentenced to a combined 50 years in prison for committing unspeakable acts of sexual abuse against a young girl.
The sentences, handed down by Regional Magistrate Stanley Mambanje, mark a strong stand against the horrific crimes that shattered the life of an innocent 11-year-old.
The 21-year-old herdboy, convicted of three counts of rape, received a total of 35 years in jail.
Meanwhile, the 39-year-old maid, who actively participated in the abuse, was sentenced to 15 years behind bars for two counts of rape.
This dark chapter began in January 2024 in Village Mambwere, Chief Njelele, Gokwe South.
The young girl, just a child at the time, was sleeping peacefully besides her grandmother when the herdboy crept into the house, removed his trousers and assaulted her in a brutal act.
When the girl tried to report the attack, he threatened and physically assaulted her, silencing her with fear.
The situation worsened in April 2025 when the maid joined in the abuse.
Together, the pair forced the girl to watch pornographic videos before the herdboy raped her again.
The maid, instead of protecting the child, directed the assault and threatened the girl with violence to ensure her silence.
The pair repeated the horrific ordeal on another occasion, leaving the girl trapped in fear and despair.
It was not until last month that the truth came to light.
The brave young girl finally confided in her aunt, who took her to a Victim Friendly Unit clinic for medical assistance.
A police report was filed, leading to the arrests of both the herdboy and the maid.
During the trial, prosecutor Ms Gertrude Shoko presented overwhelming evidence, including medical reports confirming the abuse.
Magistrate Mambanje condemned the pair’s actions, highlighting the immense physical and emotional harm inflicted on the child.
“This court cannot ignore the seriousness of these crimes,” said Magistrate Mambanje as he handed down the sentences.
“The damage done to this young girl will haunt her for the rest of her life.”
The Gokwe community remains in mourning, grappling with the enormity of the betrayal and cruelty inflicted on one of its most vulnerable members.
Villagers, shaken by the ordeal, have called for greater protection for children and harsher penalties for sexual predators.
“This is a nightmare,” one community elder, Sibangani Madobha said.
“How could people who were supposed to care for the child do something so evil? Our children deserve better.”
As the perpetrators begin their long sentences, the hope is that this case serves as a wake-up call for communities across the nation to stand united against child abuse and to protect the innocent at all costs.
