ZDF Helicopter Rescues 13 People Stranded at Mazuva Dam

Thirteen people from Chief Sengwe’s area in Chiredzi District were rescued by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) after becoming stranded at Mazuva Dam on the Mwenezi River.

Rising water levels left villagers in Kraal Head Magwambani’s community trapped and unable to reach safety.

The Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) quickly responded to distress calls and sent a helicopter to the scene.

In a coordinated airlift, the crew rescued 13 people, including young children and elderly residents.

The oldest was 72 years old and the youngest a three-month-old baby.

Speaking to ZBC News on Saturday, AFZ Director of Operations Group Captain Joseph Mavengere said the ZDF is committed to helping communities and improving its rescue capacity.

He said the force is investing in training, modern equipment, better coordination with partners, and new technologies such as enhanced aerial surveillance and communication tools.

He added that the ZDF is focused on preparedness to ensure faster, more effective responses, especially as climate-related disasters increase.

“Our goal is to build a more resilient and responsive rescue system that serves the people of Zimbabwe,” Group Captain Mavengere said.

“The Zimbabwe Defence Forces remains fully committed to protecting lives. We stand ready at all times to respond to emergencies.”

The Mazuva Dam rescue follows recent ZDF operations in the Midlands Province, where heavy rains have caused further flooding and forced more people from their homes.
