The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) has intercepted a concealed and undeclared firearm at the Plumtree Border Post, raising fresh fears about the possible smuggling of weapons into the country at a time gun‑related crimes are reportedly on the rise.

According to officials, the firearm was discovered hidden inside a traveller’s suitcase, indicating what authorities believe was a deliberate attempt to evade detection.

Zimra has so far released only limited information, confirming the seizure but declining to disclose details about the weapon, the suspect, or its intended destination.

The incident comes as Plumtree continues to be viewed as one of the country’s most vulnerable entry points due to porous borders and the existence of informal “bush routes” frequently used by smugglers. Reports have long suggested that organised syndicates operate in the area, facilitating the movement of illicit goods.

The discovery has also sparked wider debate amid rising political tensions linked to the controversial ED2030 agenda, which seeks to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s tenure. Analysts say the interception highlights growing concerns about illegal arms flows and the potential threat they pose to national security.

There are fears that such weapons could end up in the hands of criminal networks or be used to fuel political instability.

Despite the successful interception, several questions remain unanswered — including who the firearm was intended for and whether it forms part of a broader smuggling network.

Observers say greater transparency from authorities will be essential to address public concerns and restore confidence in border‑security systems.
