Beitbridge’s Secret Tunnel Exposed as Massive Dagga Bust Uncovers International Cartel Links

In a stunning operation that has rocked Zimbabwe’s criminal underworld, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has uncovered a massive drug smuggling network, arresting eight individuals and seizing a substantial haul of illegal substances. The operation, conducted between March 2 and March 4, 2025, targeted key locations in Harare and Beitbridge, exposing a sophisticated operation trafficking dagga and unregistered medicines into the country.

The arrests include a diverse group of suspects: Mphakamiseni Dhlamini (41), Ishmael Chikara (35), Linda Jimu (26), Privilege Muchenje (39), Sylia Tanyanyiwa (41), Simbarashe Maenzanise (41), Siphelile Mashamba (33), and Alice Shatirwa (29). This range of individuals hints at the extensive reach of the drug network across different age groups and potentially various social strata.

The scale of the operation became apparent with the seizure of a staggering 151 kilograms of dagga, primarily intercepted at the Beitbridge Border Post. This discovery has raised alarm bells about the porosity of Zimbabwe’s borders and the audacity of drug smugglers. Additionally, authorities confiscated 260 bottles of Broncleer Syrup (100ml each) and an undisclosed quantity of crystal meth, highlighting the diverse range of substances being trafficked.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi issued a stern warning to drug traffickers, declaring, “The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that there is no going back in the fight against drug and substance abuse.” This resolute stance underscores the government’s commitment to tackling the drug menace head-on.

The bust sheds light on Zimbabwe’s complex role in the regional drug trade. As a transit hub for narcotics destined for neighboring countries and even Europe, the nation faces unique challenges in combating drug trafficking. The involvement of organized crime networks, potentially including high-level officials, adds layers of complexity to enforcement efforts.

Of particular concern is the rise of synthetic drugs like crystal meth, which have gained popularity due to their low cost and accessibility, especially among youth. The economic hardships exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic have further fueled this trend, pushing more individuals towards substance abuse.

As investigations continue, authorities are working to dismantle the broader network behind this operation. The ZRP has called for increased community involvement, urging citizens to report suspicious activities through the National Complaints Desk and WhatsApp tip-off lines.

This significant drug bust serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against narcotics in Zimbabwe. While challenges remain, operations like this demonstrate law enforcement’s determination to protect communities from the scourge of drug abuse and trafficking.
