Body of Dairibord truck driver recovered after hours under water
The body of Kudakwashe Chigumira Matiyenga, a Dairibord Zimbabwe truck driver, was recovered early Thursday morning after he was trapped underwater for several hours following a tragic road accident near Beatrice Bridge.
According to local authorities, the incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. when the Dairibord truck veered off the road and plunged into the water. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle lost control on a sharp curve before crashing through the guardrails and submerging in the river below.
Emergency response teams, including police, fire services, and community volunteers, launched an intensive search operation immediately after the accident. After nearly seven hours of search efforts, the body of Matiyenga was retrieved at approximately 8:45 a.m.
Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachii confirmed the recovery and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.
“This is a deeply unfortunate incident. Our teams worked tirelessly through the night to recover the body. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family, colleagues, and friends of the late Mr. Matiyenga,” said Inspector Chazovachii.
The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest that poor visibility and slippery road conditions may have contributed to the crash. Authorities have since launched a full inquiry to determine the circumstances leading to the fatal plunge.
Dairibord Zimbabwe has not yet released an official statement, but sources close to the company indicated that management is working closely with the family and providing support during this difficult time.
Kudakwashe Chigumira Matiyenga was described by colleagues as a dedicated and hardworking employee with years of experience behind the wheel. His untimely death has left a deep void among co-workers and within the transport community.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when driving at night, particularly along known black spots like the Beatrice Bridge section of the highway.
Authorities continue to monitor the area and have pledged to increase safety measures to prevent future incidents.
