Zimbaweans react to news of Mzembi being remanded in custody till Monday
Former Tourism Minister Walter Mzembi was yesterday arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission ZACC.
He appeared at the Magistrates Court today.
Mzembi has been sent to remand prison and will be back in court on Monday.
Harare magistrate Donald Ndirowei postponed to Monday a hearing into Mzembi’s bid to have three arrest warrants against him for skipping a criminal abuse of office trial in 2018 cancelled.
The ex-Minister was nabbed on January 5 2018 and appeared in court the following day where he was granted bail but he later skipped the country.
A warrant was issued. Now, the court will decide whether to cancel the warrant or order his detention until the end of his trial
Mzembi was accused of giving away 16 television sets worth US$800,000 to Prophets Walter Magaya and Emmanuel Makandiwa’s churches.
He was Tourism Minister when he made the donation.
Mzembi was also accused of misappropriating US$1.6 million meant for the United Nations World Tourism Organisation meeting which was co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Zambia in 2013.
