Ruling on Mzembi’s Freedom Bid Moved to Friday
The High Court has postponed the ruling on former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi’s application challenging his placement on remand to Friday. Mzembi’s bail was revoked last month after he skipped court for seven years, with the magistrate ruling that he failed to report back on time despite having the opportunity.
Mzembi’s lawyer, Killian Mandiki, argued that his client was not in wilful default, citing a life-threatening condition that required frequent hospitalization. However, the magistrate noted that Mzembi’s illness didn’t seem severe enough to prevent him from attending court.
The case has sparked interest due to Mzembi’s high-profile involvement in politics, including his role as campaign manager for Saviour Kasukuwere’s presidential bid. Mzembi faces charges related to theft of trust property and failure to return a passport released for a specific number of days.
The postponement comes as the court awaits further submissions from Mzembi’s lawyer, who plans to file written arguments before the State responds. The outcome of the case will determine whether Mzembi will be granted freedom pending trial.
