Suspected Zanu PF youths violently disrupt Job Sikhala’s book launch in Masvingo

A GROUP of suspected Zanu PF youths violently disrupted the launch of opposition politician Job Sikhala’s book in Masvingo Friday. The book, Footprints in the Chains authored by Munyaradzi Angelo Savanhu, chronicles Sikhala’s life as an activist, including over 70 arrests, torture and detentions.

In a video shared online by Sikhala, the mob, which appeared drunk, attacked one of the speakers, then began violently throwing chairs and manhandling a man who tried to stop them. They were shouting that no one should speak about politics or President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Sikhala attempted to address the attendees but the group continued causing commotion.

Sikhala was eventually forced to call off the event.

The group later seized copies of the book, tossing them, with some getting torn, while others were taken away.

Sikhala condemned the violence and disruption of his book launch.

“Drunken well-known Zanu PF goons in Masvingo came and violently disrupted our book launch at the Charles Austin Theatre at the Civic Centre.

“They started attacking the Guest of Honour Matthew Takaona when he was delivering his speech.

“One of the speakers Dr. Takavafira Zhou was pounded while addressing at the pulpit by one of the drunken thugs.

“The pathetic violence by the beast is continuing. We condemn in totality all forms of violence and the disruption of our book launch,” Sikhala said.

The Masvingo launch was preceded by other launches in Harare and Bulawayo, drawing attendance of notable figures from opposition politics.
