In a show of excellence among primary schools within a regional block, council run West View Primary School came out tops in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Primary Schools Debate and Public Speaking Competition held in South Africa from the 8th to the 11th this month.

Pupils who carried the day for the institution were Natasha Chisuwa, Panashe Machinya, Sammara Muchemedze and Wadiwa Dodo with their teachers Victor Pamukupasa and Millicent Mamombe.

The school is run by City of Kadoma. The council run school affirmed its position as a force to reckon with in education circles as it shrugged off competition from other top schools in the region in that gruelling engagement.
By clinching the top gong, the learning institution booked a berth to participate at an even more prestigious, Pan African Competition slated for Rwanda, at a date to be communicated.
The school from a suburb by the same name in the gold mining city is basking in the rare glory for local schools, propelling it to stardom with attendant benefits for learners, staff and authorities.
With the achievement, the school is angled to attract sponsorship, partnership and impetus to maintain the momentum.
From a legacy perspective, this sets a challenge for future endeavours to equal or surpass that feat, which is no mean undertaking.
City of Kadoma is over the moon on the achievement, showering praises on the outstanding performance.
On the crown clinched by their school, city mayor Cllr Nigel Ruzario commented: “This is exciting news from our school. That has put us on the SADC map and we really appreciate the work being done by all our schools. Indeed, Westview Council Primary School performed well from national competitions held at Amai Mugabe School in Mazowe right through to South Africa for the SADC competitions. It is from this regional competition that Westview Council School has qualified for PAN African Competitions to be held in Rwanda.”
He pointed out that the school shone against the odds.
“I appear to emphasize on Westview Council Primary School because it has excelled against the odds. We realize that even though our schools are resource constrained, they strive to deliver their best and are doing wonders in the academic field. Well done, Westview.”
Contacted, Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has also expressed gratitude over the recent feat by the council run entity, with director of communication and advocacy, Taungana Ndoro responding thus, “As the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, we’re very proud of the feat by West View Primary in winning the SADC Schools Debate and Public Speaking Competition held in SA recently. This just goes to show how our Heritage Based Curriculum has taken root enabling our schools to win international accolades. We’re on top of everything in terms of innovation and education, based on the curriculum we’re delivering as we move towards a prosperous, knowledgeable and empowered Middle Income Economy by 2030.”
The council run school has demonstrated to all and sundry that it is not all gloom in council corridors but there stands some positive indicators.
Councils, as City of Kadoma exemplifies, can tap into subsidiary developmental vehicles and reap rewards to invest in their operations for the good of communities and stakeholders.
The feat also sends a strong message that it is possible for any other institution in the country, notwithstanding their handlers, to scale such dizzy heights.
